About the Nador – Sète crossing
The Nador to Sète ferry is the direct maritime link between eastern Morocco and southern France, landing at the Mediterranean port of Sète near Montpellier on the Occitanie coast. It is the longest of Nador's regular crossings and a popular alternative to driving the length of Spain, sailing from the Beni Ensar terminal north of Nador.
The route is operated by Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) – taking over a France–Morocco corridor historically associated with the La Méridienne brand – using large cruise-ferries fitted with cabins, restaurants, bars, shops and lounges for the extended voyage.
Crossing time and frequency
This is a genuine long-haul crossing. Sailing time runs from roughly 36 to 46 hours depending on the ship, routing and weather – typically a day and a half or more at sea. GNV generally schedules around three weekly connections, usually with afternoon departures. A cabin is effectively given the duration, and vehicle decks carry cars, motorhomes and motorcycles.
Peak season
Strongly seasonal. While the corridor operates through much of the year, frequency and demand climb sharply in summer, when the route becomes a key artery for the Moroccan diaspora in France during Operation Marhaba (roughly June to mid-September). High-season rotations increase, while off-season sailings are sparse – sometimes only one every week or so – so the timetable should always be checked for specific dates.
Documents
As an international Morocco–EU crossing, all passengers need a valid passport, and drivers must carry vehicle registration and insurance (green card). Border formalities are handled at both ports, and travellers should plan for a full-day-plus journey with meals and rest on board.
