Sète to Nador Ferry

The Sète to Nador ferry links the southern French port of Sète, on the Mediterranean coast near Montpellier, with Nador in northeastern Morocco, the port serving the Rif region and one of the main gateways for travellers heading to Morocco's northeast. It is a long-distance direct crossing that avoids the long overland drive down through Spain, and it is especially important to the Moroccan diaspora in France.

Operator and vessels

The route is operated by GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci), using conventional car ferries built for medium-to-long Mediterranean routes. The ships carry foot passengers and vehicles together, with a range of cabins and seating classes, restaurants and large communal areas for the extended voyage.

Crossing time

This is one of the longer scheduled ferry crossings in the western Mediterranean. The direct passage from Sète to Nador typically takes in the region of 36 to 40 hours, and can run longer depending on the ship and sea conditions. Because it spans well over a day at sea, booking a cabin rather than a reclining seat is strongly recommended.

Season and frequency

The service is heavily seasonal. It runs year-round but with far greater frequency and capacity in summer, when the route carries huge numbers of Moroccan families living in France returning home for the holidays during the annual Marhaba operation. In the peak June to September period there can be several sailings a week, while in the low season departures drop to roughly one every week or so. Summer sailings, particularly for vehicles, sell out early.

Passport and vehicles

As an international crossing between France and Morocco, a valid passport is required for all travellers, and non-EU nationals should verify Moroccan entry requirements. The route is popular with drivers loading cars and motorhomes for the summer, so vehicle documentation and insurance should be carried. Advance booking is in the high season.
