The Barcelona to Palma de Mallorca crossing is the busiest gateway between the Catalan mainland and the Balearic Islands, spanning roughly 130 nautical miles of open Mediterranean between the port of Barcelona and Palma's Estació Marítima. Two operators dominate the link: Baleària and Trasmed (part of the Acciona group, which absorbed the historic Trasmediterranea brand). Most services to Palma itself are overnight conventional ferries rather than fast day boats. Departures cluster in the late evening, typically between 21:30 and 23:00, with arrival in Palma the following morning around 05:00 to 06:30 — a crossing of roughly 7 to 8.5 hours. This overnight format is deliberate: passengers book a cabin, sleep through the passage, and wake up in Mallorca with a full day ahead, effectively saving a night's accommodation. These are large ro-pax vessels carrying cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and freight alongside foot passengers, with cabins, reclining seats, restaurants, shops and pet-friendly areas on board.

Travellers wanting a faster daytime option should note the distinction: Baleària's high-speed catamaran Margarita Salas runs a fast service to Alcúdia, on Mallorca's north coast, in about 3.5 hours (roughly April to October), but this does not dock at Palma. For Palma specifically, the overnight ferry remains the standard choice year-round.

Combined frequency across the operators runs to roughly 14–18 crossings per week, thinning in winter and peaking through the summer season. Foot-passenger fares can start from around €15 on promotional sailings, while accompanied cars typically start near €120; cabin berths are priced separately and sell out fast in July and August. Because departure and arrival times shift by 30–60 minutes with the season and vessel rotation, always confirm the exact timetable with your operator before travelling.
