About the Tánger Med – Genoa crossing
The Tanger Med to Genoa ferry is the flagship long-haul link between Morocco and northwest Italy, operated by Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV). For 2026 GNV runs this as a Genoa–Barcelona–Tanger Med service, using the Catalan port as a mid-route hub, and has deployed two new LNG-powered vessels — GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo — on the corridor to add capacity and modernise the fleet ahead of the summer season.
Crossing time
Because most sailings call at Barcelona, plan on a genuine multi-night voyage. Typical transit runs from about 46 to 49 hours, with some services stretching longer depending on the vessel, the stopover and sea conditions. Across the wider Genoa–Tanger Med corridor there can be up to roughly 10–11 departures per week at peak, though frequency on any single leg varies by season.
On board and vehicles
GNV ships carry foot passengers, cars, motorhomes, caravans and motorcycles, making this a popular option for travellers moving vehicles between Europe and Morocco. For an overnight or two-night sailing a cabin is the comfortable choice; vessels also offer reclining seats, restaurants, bars and shops. The newer LNG ships bring updated cabin accommodation and lower-emission operation.
Why Genoa
Genoa is one of Italy’s largest ports and a strong entry point for onward travel across Liguria, Piedmont, Milan and the wider north of the country, with good motorway and rail connections from the port area. That makes it a practical arrival point for anyone continuing deep into Italy or beyond.
Documents
This is an international crossing between the Schengen Area and Morocco. A valid passport is required for all passengers, non-Moroccan nationals should verify visa rules, and drivers must carry full vehicle paperwork. Allow extra time at Tanger Med for Moroccan immigration and customs.
