Tánger Med to Civitavecchia Ferry

The Tanger Med to Civitavecchia ferry is one of the longest passenger crossings in the western Mediterranean, linking northern Morocco with the main cruise and ferry port serving Rome. It is operated by Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV), and in practice it is rarely a straight port-to-port hop: for the 2026 Marhaba season GNV routes much of its Italy–Morocco traffic through a Barcelona hub, so the sailing often calls at Barcelona before continuing on to Lazio. That routing is the main reason the total transit is so long — typically in the region of 63 to 67 hours, essentially two to three nights aboard.

What to expect on board

Because the passage spans multiple nights, a cabin is strongly recommended rather than a reclining seat. GNV vessels on the Morocco corridor carry cars, motorhomes and motorcycles as well as foot passengers, and onboard facilities generally include restaurants, bars, a shop and, on the newer LNG ships, more modern cabin accommodation.

Civitavecchia sits on the Tyrrhenian coast about 80 km northwest of Rome, with direct rail links into the capital, which makes it a natural gateway for travellers heading to central Italy. Frequency on this specific long-haul pairing is limited and seasonal — often only around one sailing per week — and capacity peaks over the summer Marhaba period when Moroccan families living in Europe travel home.
