About the Civitavecchia – Tánger Med crossing
The Civitavecchia to Tanger Med ferry is one of the longest passenger sea crossings in the western Mediterranean, linking the port of Rome with northern Morocco. It is operated exclusively by Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) and runs as a seasonal summer service, typically active only from around June to September rather than year-round.
This is not a short hop: the full journey takes roughly 56 to 58 hours, and it is not a straight point-to-point sailing. GNV's Civitavecchia departures generally call at Barcelona en route before continuing to Tanger Med, so the route effectively stitches together the Italian and Spanish legs of GNV's Morocco network. During peak summer weeks GNV usually operates about one crossing per week on this connection, with the exact calendar varying year to year.
Departures from Civitavecchia have historically left in the early afternoon (around 13:00). Because of the long duration, cabins are strongly recommended over deck seating, and onboard facilities include restaurants, bars and lounges to make the multi-day passage comfortable.
The route carries vehicles as well as foot passengers — cars, motorcycles, campers and trucks can all be booked, which makes it popular with travellers driving between mainland Europe and Morocco, and with members of the Moroccan diaspora returning home over the summer.
The Moroccan terminal is Tanger Med, a large modern port located about 40 km northeast of Tangier city near Ksar es-Seghir, not the older Tangier city (Tanger Ville) port. As an international crossing between the EU and Morocco, all travellers need a valid passport, and vehicle documents plus Moroccan entry formalities apply on arrival.
Important: because this is a seasonal, low-frequency route whose calendar changes each year, always confirm current sailing dates directly with GNV before planning a trip — in some years the direct Civitavecchia origin may not be offered at all outside high summer.
