Ferries from Piraeus

The stretch of quay where you board a ferry to Naxos is roughly a third of Piraeus, and not the largest third. The same harbour authority runs one of the Mediterranean's biggest container terminals and a cruise homeport in the world's top ten. Understanding that the ferry gates are a slice of an industrial complex — rather than the whole of it — explains most of what feels odd about arriving here.

Three ports under one name

Piraeus is administratively split into three sectors that share a coastline and almost nothing else:

• The Passenger Port (Central) — the twelve numbered gates, E1 to E12, where every scheduled ferry and every cruise ship berths.
• The Commercial Port at Hercules and Drapetsona — containers and cargo.
• The Ship Repair Zone at Perama — dry docks and yards.

A ferry passenger only ever sees the first, and only a part of it. The other two are why the road approaches carry lorry traffic at hours no island boat would explain.

The numbers, because they set the tone

Piraeus is Europe's busiest passenger port. Across all services it handles more than 20 million passengers a year, of which over 18 million are ferry passengers — the island network, not the cruise trade.

The cruise side set a record in 2025 with 863 ships and roughly 1.85 million passengers, which places Piraeus among the world's ten largest cruise homeports and the top three in the Mediterranean. On the freight side, the container terminals move about 5.1 million TEU a year.

Put together: the ferry gates you are standing at carry nine times the people the cruise terminals do, and get a fraction of the attention.

⚠ Piers II and III are not Greek-operated

The container business at Piraeus is run in part by COSCO, the Chinese state shipping group, which operates Piers II and III with a capacity of about 5.7 million TEU. Across all three terminals the port's container capacity sits somewhere between 7.5 and 8.3 million TEU.

This has no direct bearing on your sailing, and it is the single most consequential thing about the port. It is why Piraeus rebuilt itself into a global transhipment hub over the last decade, why the investment went where it did, and why the passenger side has been upgraded on the back of freight money rather than ticket revenue.

35 routes and 157 active sailings touch Piraeus in our data — more than any other port on this site. Seven operators share them, and the distribution is lopsided:

• Blue Star Ferries — 23 routes, 65 sailings. Close to half of everything.
• Hellenic Seaways — 22 sailings; SeaJets — 21; Minoan Lines — 20.
• Fast Ferries and Olympian Ferries — 9 each; Magic Sea Ferries — 3.

The practical reading: if a Greek island crossing exists from Athens, Blue Star probably runs it, and the alternatives cluster on the busy routes rather than spreading across the network.

The links that carry the most sailings

• Poros — 13 sailings, about 55 minutes.
• Aegina — 12, roughly 40 minutes on the fast craft.
• Heraklion — 11, the overnight to Crete at about 9 h 15 m.
• Milos — 11 inbound; Santorini — 10.
• Paros, Syros, Chios, Rhodes, Kos and the rest of the Cyclades, Dodecanese and North Aegean.

Note what is not here: nothing international. Every sailing from Piraeus is domestic. For Italy you go to Patras or Igoumenitsa; for Turkey, to one of the eastern islands.

Which gate, and where that is answered

The gates run E1 to E12 along roughly four kilometres of waterfront, and getting the wrong one costs a long walk with luggage. The short version for orientation only: Crete and the Dodecanese berth at the low numbers, the Cyclades and the Saronic islands at the high ones, and the electronic boards at the entrance are the authority on the day.

When the port is at its limit

Mid-July to late August, and specifically Friday evenings and Sunday returns, when island traffic and Athenian weekend traffic land on the same quay. Add the cruise season, which now runs longer at both ends than it did, and the approach roads carry three different kinds of vehicle at once.

Outside that window Piraeus behaves like the working harbour it is: busy, unglamorous, and entirely navigable if you know your gate.
