About
About Samos
Vathy is a county town that happens to have a deep-water quay, not a resort built around one. The ferry berth sits on the waterfront of Samos's administrative capital, among the offices, the schools and the shipping agents — which is why arriving here feels different from arriving on most Aegean islands.
Where the boats actually berth
Samos has three harbours and they do not do the same work: Vathy in the northeast is the main port and the fastest crossing to Turkey; Pythagorio in the southeast is closest to the Turkish coast; Karlovasi in the northwest handles Greek domestic sailings only.
That split, and why it matters before you book accommodation, is set out on the Samos guide. This page is about the quay itself.
What ties up at Vathy
From our timetable, 19 active sailings across the island: Piraeus at about 9 h 15 m, Kuşadası at roughly 75 minutes, Kos at around 4 hours, Chios at about 3 hours and Mykonos at 4 h 25 m.
Blue Star, Dodekanisos Seaways and SeaJets work the Greek routes; the Turkish crossings are run by smaller local operators.
⚠ Two kinds of arrival at the same quay
A domestic sailing puts you on the street within minutes. An arrival from Turkey goes through passport control first, because this is an external border of the Schengen area.
Allow for that in both directions. On a crossing shorter than an hour, the formalities are the longer half of the journey.
The town behind the berth
Vathy climbs the slope behind its harbour in nineteenth-century houses built on the trade that the port served. The archaeological museum holds the Kouros of Samos, a five-metre marble figure, and the older village of Ano Vathy sits above the modern town.
None of it is more than a few minutes from the ramp, which makes a gap between boats genuinely usable here.
Season
The Turkish crossings run year round, unusually for a Greek–Turkish link. The Piraeus service also continues through winter. What thins out is the lateral network to Chios, Kos and the Cyclades.
