About
About Mykonos
The Old Port stopped being able to cope about fifteen years ago, so Mykonos built a new one two kilometres up the coast. Tourlos exists because a harbour in the middle of a town could not grow, and everything awkward about arriving on this island follows from that decision.
Two harbours, one of them yours
Tourlos, the New Port, takes every scheduled ferry and high-speed craft, and the cruise ships. The Old Port in Chora now handles the Delos excursion boats, small craft and yachts.
Getting from Tourlos into town — the Sea Bus, the KTEL buses and why the island's taxi fleet is not the answer — is covered on the Mykonos guide.
What berths at Tourlos
From our timetable, 35 active sailings: Santorini with 4 at about 2 h 10 m, Rafina with 3 at roughly 4 h 20 m, Tinos with 3 at 30 minutes — the shortest hop from the island — plus Andros, Naxos and Samos.
Blue Star, SeaJets, Golden Star and Fast Ferries all use the port, and the cruise berths take large ships that the old harbour could never have accepted.
⚠ Ferries and cruise calls share one road
Tourlos handles both, and there is a single route from the port into Chora. On a day with two cruise ships alongside and a morning of ferry arrivals, that road is the constraint on the whole island's movement.
The cruise schedule is published; the ferry timetable makes no mention of it. Checking both before fixing an arrival time is the single most useful piece of Mykonos planning.
Why the Old Port could not be extended
It sits directly against Chora, on a shallow curve with the town built to the water's edge. There was nowhere to put a longer quay, deeper water or a marshalling area for vehicles — the constraints that force new ports everywhere.
What the town kept is a working small harbour in its centre, which is why the waterfront still looks the way the postcards suggest.
Season
The fast craft network peaks from June to September and thins sharply after. Blue Star's conventional sailings carry the island through winter, when Tourlos is quiet enough that the two-kilometre problem stops being one.
