Ferries from Rhodes

Rhodes is the transport hub of the Dodecanese — the largest island in the group, the last major Greek island before the Turkish coast, and the point almost every other island in the chain connects through. Fifteen scheduled routes run from here, reaching mainland Greece, a dozen neighbouring islands, the Cyclades, and three ports in Turkey.

Rhodes has five harbours — check which one you need

This is the single most important thing to know before you travel. Rhodes does not have one ferry terminal; it has several, spread along the coast, and they serve different traffic. The Turkish coast is 24 km away and the wrong harbour can be 30 km in the opposite direction.

• Central Port (Rhodes Town) — the tourism board lists this as handling exclusively international traffic: the scheduled services to and from Turkey, plus cruise ships and yachts.
• Kolona — directly opposite and north of the Central Port. This is where intra-Dodecanese traffic goes, which in practice means the fast catamarans working the island chain.
• Akandia — the newer basin immediately south of the Central Port, handling domestic, cargo and general traffic. The big passenger-vehicle ferries to Piraeus use it. A passenger terminal is still under construction here, so facilities are thin.
• Kamiros Skala — about 30 km southwest of Rhodes Town, near the ruins of Ancient Kamiros. It exists mainly to serve Chalki. If your ticket says Kamiros Skala, budget roughly 40 minutes of driving; there is no walking to it from the old town.
• Lardos — on the southeast coast, under development as a fallback for days when weather closes the Central Port.

One caveat worth respecting: official sources do not fully agree on where the Turkish services berth. The tourism board puts them at the Central Port; the Municipal Port Fund of South Dodecanese lists seasonal Marmaris, Datça and Fethiye sailings under Akandia. The two basins are adjacent, but they are not the same gate. Take the harbour named on your ticket or booking confirmation as the authority, and if it is ambiguous, call ahead — the port fund answers on +30 22410 43500, Akandia directly on +30 22410 43514.

Where you can sail from Rhodes, and how long it takes

Durations below come from the sailings currently in our timetable, which is why several show a range rather than a single number — the same route is worked by different vessels, and on the longer runs by itineraries with different numbers of intermediate calls.

• Piraeus (Athens) — Blue Star Ferries, 13 to 28 hours. That spread is not a mistake: the fastest departure runs close to direct, while the slowest threads through the Dodecanese and Cyclades on the way. Check the itinerary, not just the departure time, before booking an overnight.
• Kos — the busiest link, worked by both companies. Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans do it in 2 h 5 m to 3 h 30 m; Blue Star's larger ferries take 2 h 40 m to 5 h 25 m depending on calls.
• Symi — 50 to 85 minutes, the most frequent short hop, with sailings most days in season. Some services continue to Panormitis monastery on the island's south coast rather than Symi town.
• Marmaris (Turkey) — roughly 50 minutes at sea across 24 km. Add border formalities; see below.
• Fethiye (Turkey) — a longer international run, operated seasonally.
• Tilos, Kalymnos, Kastellorizo, Nisyros — Dodecanese connections of one to several hours, thinning sharply outside summer.
• Santorini — a seasonal Cyclades link, not a year-round service.
• Chalki — two different journeys sharing one name; see below.

Chalki: two ways, and they leave from different places

Blue Star calls at Chalki from Rhodes Town on a couple of days a week in summer, a crossing of about 1 h 45 m as part of a longer itinerary. That is the connection most schedule sites show.

The service islanders actually use is the small local boat from Kamiros Skala — Nissos Halki, Nikos Express and Fedon Halki — crossing in roughly 40 minutes, most days through the season and only a few times a week from October to May. Two things make it awkward to plan: the harbour is 30 km from Rhodes Town, and departure times are often confirmed only about a week ahead. The Chalki Port Authority (+30 22460 45220) is the reliable source for current times.

Crossing to Turkey

These are international sailings between an EU member state and a non-EU country, and the border is the slow part, not the sea. Passport control runs on both sides — on exit and entry, in both directions — and each check takes at least 30 minutes, with the Greek exit check averaging around 25.

Plan on being at the harbour an hour before departure; check-in typically opens 90 minutes ahead. July and August are the pinch point, because the Fethiye and Marmaris departures share the same slots and the same control desks. A 50-minute crossing can comfortably take three hours door to door.

Carry the passport you booked with, and check your own visa position for both countries before travelling — nationality rules differ and neither operator can wave you through a border post.

Operators sailing from Rhodes

• Blue Star Ferries — the mainline operator, running the large passenger-vehicle ships on the Piraeus route and the Dodecanese connections that carry cars.
• Dodekanisos Seaways — the local fast-ferry company, based here and working 18 destinations across the Dodecanese and eastern Aegean with the catamarans Dodekanisos Express and Dodekanisos Pride plus the passenger-vehicle ferry Panagia Skiadeni. Reachable on +30 22410 70590.
• Yeşil Marmaris Lines — the Turkish operator that opened the Marmaris–Rhodes link in the first place, sailing since 1962 with six catamarans and one ferry, and running to the Greek islands year-round rather than seasonally.
• Tilos Travel — works the Fethiye connection.

Practical notes

Season matters more here than almost anywhere. The Dodecanese network roughly triples in summer: Chalki alone goes from about three sailings a week in winter to seventeen. Routes to the Cyclades and some Turkish services simply do not run out of season, and a timetable you found in August tells you very little about March.

Wind is the usual reason a sailing is cancelled. The meltemi blows hardest in July and August, and the small boats and catamarans are the first to be held in port — the large Blue Star ships are the last. If your onward travel depends on a fast-ferry connection, leave a day of slack rather than an hour.

Buy ahead for August. Cabins on the Piraeus overnight and vehicle space on any route sell out well before departure in high season, and the popular day-trip sailings to Symi fill quickly.
