The Société des traversiers du Québec is the provincial body that runs Québec's ferries, operating regional marine transport 365 days a year with more than 700 employees.

The river is the road

Most crossings span the St. Lawrence, where the river is too wide to bridge: Québec–Lévis in the city itself, Rivière-du-Loup–Saint-Siméon, Matane–Baie-Comeau–Godbout linking the south shore to the Côte-Nord, Tadoussac–Baie-Sainte-Catherine at the mouth of the Saguenay, and Sorel-Tracy–Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola upstream.

Islands and the far north shore

Services reach L'Isle-aux-Coudres, L'Isle-aux-Grues, Île Verte, the Îles-de-la-Madeleine in the Gulf, and Île d'Anticosti. On the Basse-Côte-Nord — the roadless coast east of Natashquan — the boats serving Harrington Harbour, Chevery and Rivière Saint-Augustin are the only scheduled link those villages have. Île d'Entrée–Cap-aux-Meules connects within the Madeleine archipelago.

A ferry operator that is also a highway department

The STQ has run Québec's public ferries since 1971, and it defines its own job in four parts: to end the isolation of island communities, to join up severed sections of the same provincial highway, to relieve congestion on those highways with inter-regional crossings, and to link urban public transport networks. That second one explains a lot — on several crossings the ferry is not an alternative to the road, it is the road.

Thirteen services, nine of them in-house

The network runs from Montréal to eastern Québec, taking in the Basse-Côte-Nord and the Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Nine of the thirteen are operated directly by around 750 staff, together making more than 104,000 crossings a year and carrying close to 4.8 million passengers and 2.2 million vehicles. The STQ acts as the right hand of the Ministère des Transports for maritime passenger transport and port infrastructure.

The long northern run is a partnership

The Rimouski–Blanc-Sablon service, which stitches the remote Lower North Shore together, is operated with Relais Nordik, a Groupe Desgagnés subsidiary, aboard the NM Bella Desgagnés. After Sept-Îles it calls at Port-Menier on Anticosti, then Havre-Saint-Pierre, Natashquan, Kegaska, La Romaine, Harrington Harbour, Tête-à-la-Baleine and Saint-Augustin — villages on the ancestral land of the Innu, most of which have no road at all.
