About the Pakuashipi – Saint-Augustin crossing
From the Innu community of Pakuashipi, this eight-minute crossing of the Saint-Augustin river reaches the village of Saint-Augustin on the opposite bank — where the school, the clinic and the airstrip are. It is a short hop by any measure, but in a region with no road link to the rest of Québec it does the work that a bridge or a five-minute drive would do elsewhere. Departures are frequent through the day. The wider context matters for anyone planning to reach either community: this is the Lower North Shore, east of the end of Route 138, and getting here at all means a flight, the coastal vessel, or the ice roads that form between the villages in deep winter.
