About the St-Joseph-de-la-Rive – L'Isle-aux-Coudres crossing
Charlevoix's island crossing: 3.7 kilometres from the wharf at Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive, part of Les Éboulements, to L'Isle-aux-Coudres in about 20 minutes. It is free, runs all year, and departs roughly every half hour through the day, thinning to hourly in the evening — frequent enough that the island functions as an extension of the Route 362 tourist road rather than a separate expedition. Jacques Cartier named the island for the hazelnuts his crew found there in 1535. What draws visitors now is a 26-kilometre road around the perimeter that has made it a cycling destination, along with two preserved water mills and the shipbuilding history of the schooner yards on the mainland side. Cars, bicycles and foot passengers are all carried.
