Ferries from Naxos

You step off the ramp and the Portara is five hundred metres away — a single marble doorway on a rocky islet, all that was ever finished of a temple to Apollo, framing the sunset for anyone standing on the quay. Very few ferry berths in Greece put their landmark that close.

A port inside the town

Everything arrives at Chora, the island's capital, and the walk from the ramp is short in every direction that matters: the Portara under 500 m, the Kastro quarter about the same, the central bus station within a few minutes on foot.

The quay handles both high-speed catamarans and full-size conventional ferries, which is unusual for a harbour this close to a town centre and is the reason the waterfront is busy in a way that most Cycladic ports are not.

Where the boats go

Naxos sits on the main Cyclades trunk route and the connections reflect it: Piraeus, Paros, Santorini, Mykonos, Ios and the Small Cyclades all appear from this quay. The Naxos guide covers the routing choices and which vessel type suits which crossing.

⚠ Conventional and high-speed do not load the same way

The large ferries take vehicles and use the deep berth; the fast craft carry foot passengers, board quickly and leave on time. On a busy August evening both can be alongside within minutes of each other and the quayside sorts itself out by shouting.

Know which one you are on before you join a queue, and treat the fast craft's departure time as literal — they do not wait.

The Portara, practically

It stands on the islet of Palatia, joined to the harbour by a causeway, and it is genuinely a five-minute walk from the ferry ramp. If you have an hour between boats, that is where to spend it.

It is also the reason arriving by sea at Naxos is better than arriving by air: the gate is oriented so that you see it from the water on the approach.

Practicalities

Ticket offices line the waterfront, hire cars and scooters are picked up within a block of the ramp, and the bus station handles the island's villages and beaches. There is no separate terminal building of any size — the port is the promenade.
