About Irakleia
Irakleia is the westernmost inhabited island of the Small Cyclades, sitting between Ios, Naxos and Koufonisia. It has 151 inhabitants and two villages — Panagia, also called Chora, and Agios Georgios, which is the port.
Ten beaches, three of them reachable by car
That ratio tells you what kind of island this is. Livadi is considered the best — a long sandy beach looking across to the islet of Venetiko and to Schoinousa. Agios Georgios, by the harbour, is the easiest to reach. Tourkopigado is pebble and takes about half an hour on foot from Panagia; there is no road to it.
A wreck from the war
Divers come for Alimia, where a German aircraft shot down during the Second World War lies on the seabed. The water around the island is clear and the seabed rich enough that underwater exploration is one of the main reasons people stay.
