About

About Schoinousa

Schoinousa is one of the smallest islands in the Cyclades and lies close to Naxos. Its harbour, Mersini, is regarded as one of the best refuges for small boats in the whole Aegean — a natural shelter that matters when the meltemi blows.

Two villages

Chora stands on a hill one kilometre from the port; Messaria is a further 2.5 km beyond it. The permanent houses are built in traditional Cycladic style, and the walk up from Mersini is short enough to do with luggage.

Eighteen beaches, mostly on dirt roads

Tsigkouri is the most popular — sandy, with shade trees, which makes it the one families choose. Beyond it lie Livadi, Tholari, Lioliou, Bazaiou, Pori, Almyros, Psili Ammos, Fykio and Gerolimionas, most reached by track rather than tarmac and most of them empty even in August.

Getting here

The Express Skopelitis calls on the Small Cyclades line between Naxos and Amorgos, six times a week. Tickets and sailing times come from Paralos Travel on the island — there is no online booking for this service.
