About
About Koufonisi
Koufonisia is two islets — Ano Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi — separated by a narrow strait. Only the upper island is inhabited, and its single village, Chora, sits directly above the small harbour, so arriving passengers walk into the settlement rather than travelling to it.
The beaches
Pori is generally held to be the finest — long and sandy. Platia Pounta draws the most people; locals call it the Italian, and visitors soon do too. Charokopou is widely known as Foinikas, after the business on it. The water is shallow and unusually clear.
Sea caves
Close to the shore lie the caves of Xilompatis, Gala and the one called the Devil's Eye — all reachable by small boat and worth the trip.
Getting here
The Express Skopelitis calls six times a week on the Small Cyclades line linking Naxos with Amorgos. Tickets and times are arranged through Prasinos Tours on the island; no timetable is published online.
What it is like
Koufonisia has become well known in recent years and fills in August, but the island stays small — one village, no cars to speak of, and a scale you can cross on foot.
Five routes, and almost no departures on any of them
Koufonisi touches five routes in our data but carries only a handful of sailings: Koufonisi to Schoinousa has two departures at 30 to 35 minutes, and Koufonisi to Donousa has one, at 16:45, taking 70 minutes.
That is the Small Cyclades pattern. These islands are linked to each other and to Naxos by a small number of daily calls rather than by a network, and a single missed sailing can mean a day’s delay rather than a few hours. Departures cluster in the morning and late afternoon, which is when the boats working down the chain pass through.
