About
About Telemarkskanalen
Telemarkskanalen — the Telemark Canal — is one of Norway's great heritage waterways, and the veteran canal boats that sail it are a summer institution. Opened in 1892, the 105-kilometre canal climbs 72 metres from the coast at Skien up to Dalen through 18 locks; on completion it was hailed across Europe as "the eighth wonder of the world."
A day-long cruise through the locks
The classic trip runs the full length from Skien to Dalen — around eleven hours — passing Ulefoss, Lunde and Kviteseid and climbing the dramatic Vrangfoss staircase locks, the largest on the canal. Shorter day trips and sightseeing legs are also offered. The two historic boats, the 1882 M/S Victoria and M/S Henrik Ibsen, sail the canal daily in season and famously pass each other mid-route; the smaller M/S Telemarken works the central stretch.
Season and tickets
The canal cruises are seasonal, running roughly from May to September, and are operated by Skien-Dalen Skibsselskap. Tickets are priced in Norwegian kroner per route or leg, with one-way, round-trip and package options booked online. The Bandak–Norsjø canal was designated Norwegian national cultural heritage in 2017.
