Telemarkskanalen Schedules 2026

Look at the place names in this operator’s route list and you will notice something that appears nowhere else on this site: several of the “ports” are not harbours at all. Løveid, Ulefoss, Vrangfoss, Kjeldal, Lunde and Hogga are lock chambers. On the Telemark Canal the boat stops to be lifted, and the lift is the journey.

Seventy-two metres uphill, by water

The canal was completed in 1892, creating a continuous waterway 105 kilometres from the Grenland coast inland to Dalen, at the foot of the Hardangervidda plateau. Eight locking facilities containing 18 lock chambers raise a boat 72 metres between Skien and Dalen. Building it took 500 men five years of blasting through rock, and European travel manuals of the day called the result one of the eighth wonders of the world.

The whole canal is one day-long passage

The departure times chain end to end. A boat leaves Skien at 08:10, is at Løveid by 08:55, Ulefoss by 10:30, Vrangfoss by 12:00, Lunde 12:50, Kjeldal 13:20, Hogga 13:50, Fjågesund 15:10, Kviteseid 16:20 and Lårdal at 17:55, reaching Dalen in the early evening. That is more than ten hours for 105 kilometres — an average under 10 km/h, because most of the time is spent going up rather than along.

Which is why it only runs one way a day

A full transit takes the whole daylight, so the boat cannot do both directions in one day. Our schedule data shows the consequence precisely: the through service to Dalen runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and the run back down to Skien on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Turn up on the wrong day and the canal is going the other way.

Two boats, and they are older than most of the fleet on this site

The canal is worked by MS Victoria and MS Henrik Ibsen, sailing between Skien and Dalen from May to September. The departures recorded here belong to the late-season timetable, valid from 7 August to early October 2026, which is why some legs carry only one sailing.

Short legs are lock legs

The quickest hops in the whole listing are between adjacent locks: Lunde to Kjeldal is 20 minutes, Hogga to Kjeldal is 25. These are not transport connections in any ordinary sense — nobody commutes from one lock to the next. They exist as separate entries because the boat genuinely stops, and because a lock is where a canal journey is worth measuring from.

Reading this timetable

Treat the route list as a sequence rather than a menu. The useful question is not whether a leg exists between two points but whether your day is one of the days the boat is travelling in your direction, and how far up or down the staircase you intend to go.
