Kjeldal has a single chamber lifting about six metres, built like the rest of the flight in the 1890s from stone quarried on site. Between here and Hogga the channel runs through a cutting blasted out of rock — the navvies who did that work were mostly Swedish, and several hundred of them lived along the line for the five years the canal took to build.
