Dalen is the top of the canal, 72 metres above the sea it started from. Lårdal is 5.1 nautical miles away, 30 minutes down and 40 back, with ten sailings a week and departures at 08:00, 08:50, 17:00 and 17:55.
The morning boat goes down the system and the evening one comes back — a single vessel making one round trip a day through eighteen locks and a string of lakes.
The Dalen Hotel above the quay was built in 1894, two years after the canal opened, in the dragon style with turrets and carved gables, to house the tourists the new waterway was expected to bring. It did bring them: European royalty came here in the years before the First World War. The hotel is still open, and the boat that made it possible still ties up below it every afternoon.
