Nearly an hour for three and a half miles is the arithmetic of a boat climbing the height of a seven-storey building on its way through.
The lock staircase at Vrangfoss is the most visited point on the whole waterway — people drive here specifically to watch a boat go up, which takes something over half an hour from bottom gate to top. The stone chambers were cut in the 1890s and are still worked by hand; the canal is a listed technical monument, which means the machinery cannot be modernised even where it could be.
