Ferries from Vrangfoss sluse

Vrangfoss is the largest lock on the canal: five chambers raising a vessel 23 metres in one continuous flight. The 3.5 nautical miles from Lunde take 40 to 50 minutes, with sailings at 12:00 and 13:20 seven days a week.

Nearly an hour for three and a half miles is the arithmetic of a boat climbing the height of a seven-storey building on its way through.

The lock staircase at Vrangfoss is the most visited point on the whole waterway — people drive here specifically to watch a boat go up, which takes something over half an hour from bottom gate to top. The stone chambers were cut in the 1890s and are still worked by hand; the canal is a listed technical monument, which means the machinery cannot be modernised even where it could be.
