Fæmund II Schedules 2026

MS Fæmund II is a historic Norwegian passenger boat that runs scheduled summer sailings on Lake Femunden near Røros, carrying hikers, anglers, canoeists and sightseers into and around Femundsmarka National Park. Built in 1905 and still working the same lake more than a century later, it is one of Norway's oldest passenger vessels in continuous seasonal service. Foot passengers board at lakeside landings; there is no vehicle deck. The boat links the Røros and Engerdal districts of eastern Norway across Femunden — Norway's third-largest lake.

The lake & the landings served

Fæmund II sails the length of Femunden, connecting small piers on both shores. Its main base is Synnervika (Sørvika) in Røros Municipality, and its far turning point is Elgå in Engerdal Municipality. Typical landings include:

• Synnervika — northern base and morning departure pier
• Røa — a very popular, much-visited hiking area
• Haugen and Revlingen — access toward Svukuriset and eastern trails
• Elgå — village with café, lodging and national-park information
• Femundshytten, Jonasvollen and Buvika — western-shore stops (Buvika on extended July sailings)

The heritage ship (history)

A Røros shipping company launched the first steamer, S/S Fæmund, on the lake in 1887. In 1905 a new steel steamship, roughly 82 feet (about 25 m) long, was launched and named Fæmund II. For decades it hauled timber, post, goods and passengers; log-towing ended around 1970. In 1958 the original steam engine was replaced by a 160 hp diesel, and around 1980 the boat was rebuilt to focus on passenger traffic. Today it is preserved as a protected cultural-heritage vessel and carries up to 100 passengers.

Access to Femundsmarka for hikers & canoeists

The boat is the classic gateway into Femundsmarka National Park (established 1971), a wilderness of pine forest, open moor and countless fishing lakes. On the round trip it makes several stops, so walkers can disembark at one landing, hike marked trails, and rejoin the boat later for the return. Canoeists use it to reach put-in points and to shorten long paddling routes.

Season & booking

Fæmund II operates seasonally in summer, roughly from mid-June to mid-September, with reduced autumn sailings into early September. The boat typically departs Synnervika at 09:00 for a day-long round trip. Timetables, fares and tickets are published on the operator's site, femund.no.
