Several landings on this lake are served on request. That means telling the operator in advance that you want to board, and being visible at the jetty when the boat comes past.

Miss that and there is no second boat, no road out of some of these landings, and a very long walk.

Femunden

Norway's second largest natural lake, sixty kilometres long, lying north to south between Røros and the Swedish border. It freezes in winter and the boat season is short.

MS Fæmund II has run this water since 1905, carrying goods, post, timber and people, and it continues because some properties on the shore have no road.

Why walkers use these landings

Femundsmarka National Park lies east of the lake, and the boat is the practical way in and out. Being dropped at one landing and collected at another several days later is the standard way to walk it.

Huts are spread thinly. Plan the route around them and around the boat's calling days, which are not every day.

Getting to the lake

Røros, the copper-mining town on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is the nearest place of any size and has the rail connection. The road down the western shore reaches several of the landings; the eastern shore is largely trackless.
