About ferries in Cyprus
Cyprus is unusual among Mediterranean destinations in having very little scheduled passenger ferry service — the island sits far from the mainland, and air travel dominates. What ferry service exists splits along the island's political division.
The Republic of Cyprus (south)
The only regular passenger sea link to Europe from the south is the seasonal Limassol to Piraeus line to Athens, revived in 2022 and returning for the 2026 season aboard the Italian-flagged AF Marina (about a 31-hour crossing). Because it competes with cheap, fast flights, the line survives on a state subsidy and is aimed at passengers wanting to bring a vehicle or pet, or simply preferring the sea.
Northern Cyprus (TRNC)
The island's only year-round passenger ferries connect Northern Cyprus to Turkey: the workhorse Girne (Kyrenia)–Taşucu route (fast sea bus about 2.5 hours, or conventional overnight around 5–6 hours) run by Akgünler and Filo Denizcilik, plus the overnight Famagusta–Mersin crossing. Ferries dock at Kyrenia's modern Tourism Port, near the historic old harbour and castle.
Getting around and entry
No regular scheduled passenger ferry links the south of the island to the north by sea; movement between the two is via land crossings on the Green Line. The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member (not yet in Schengen), while Northern Cyprus grants visa-on-arrival to almost all nationalities for up to 90 days — and the entry stamp can be placed on a separate slip on request.
