Symi

The whole island empties in the early evening. Restaurants that were turning tables at noon have space, the harbour lights come on, and the mountain village of Chorio above it is quiet in a way it simply is not at midday.

The obstacle is supply: Symi is small and accommodation is limited, split between Gialos and the quieter bay at Pedi. Book well ahead, particularly for July and August, or you will find that the only option is the day trip after all.

Gialos is the port and the picture: houses rising in tiers around a horseshoe harbour, built on the sponge-diving wealth of the nineteenth century and preserved because the island's decline came before the concrete did.

Pedi is a working bay over the ridge, with a beach and a slower pace. Local buses connect Gialos, Chorio and Pedi, and small taxi boats run to the beaches that the road does not reach — which is most of them.

Symi has its own international crossings, which is unusual for an island this size: Datça at about 60 minutes with Mavi Transfer, and Marmaris at around 85 minutes.

They are seasonal and thin — our timetable holds sailings on the Datça link and none currently on Marmaris — but they mean Symi can be an entry or exit point rather than only a detour from Rhodes. Full border formalities apply.

Everything arrives by sea. If wind cancels the boats, the island waits — there is no flight, no bridge and no second operator to fall back on.

That matters at the end of a trip. Do not schedule Symi for the day before you fly home from Rhodes; leave a day of slack, or do the island early in the week.

Not a great deal, and that is the appeal. The Panormitis monastery at the southern end is the one fixed sight, reached by road or by boat. Beyond that it is swimming, walking the stepped path up to Chorio, and eating — the local shrimp are small enough to eat whole and are on every menu for a reason.

Two nights is about right. A week is for people who have decided they want to do nothing, which is a legitimate plan here.

There is one main road, a small bus, and taxi boats. Bringing a car is possible and almost never worth it — the island is steep, the parking is limited, and the beaches that justify a vehicle are reached faster by water anyway.

The walk from Gialos up to Chorio is around five hundred steps. It is the classic Symi thing to do and it is not a gentle stroll in August heat; go early or go at dusk.

The Rhodes link is the reliable one and runs across the season with multiple daily crossings; the smaller Dodecanese hops and the Turkish sailings are summer services. Winter reduces the island to a basic lifeline schedule.
