Washington State Ferries is the largest ferry system in the United States, operated by WSDOT across Puget Sound and out to the San Juan Islands. Ten route pairs make up the network:
- Anacortes – San Juan Islands and Port Townsend – Coupeville

Vehicle reservations open at a fixed hour
Some routes let you reserve a space for your vehicle, and the release is scheduled rather than rolling: autumn reservations covering 20 September to 26 December opened at 10 a.m. on 21 July. On the San Juan and Port Townsend runs a reservation is the difference between sailing and waiting in the holding lane.
A published plan for when things break
WSF publishes a Service Contingency Plan setting out how it will provide service during unexpected disruption — crew shortages, vessel failures — rather than deciding ad hoc. That is unusual candour for a public operator, and it tells you what to expect when a boat goes out of service.
