Ferries from Mukilteo

Mukilteo is the mainland end of Washington's heaviest vehicle ferry crossing, and it has two things Clinton on the far side does not: overhead loading that lets foot passengers board from an upper level, and no parking whatsoever.

The terminal has no parking lot — a handful of short-term spaces for drop-off and nothing more. Anyone planning to park on the mainland and walk on to Whidbey Island needs to work that out before arriving, not at the kerb.

The reverse arrangement works better: Clinton on the island side has a small lot by the tollbooths and a free park-and-ride on Deer Lake Road.

Overhead loading, and why it matters

Foot passengers here board from a covered walkway above the vehicle deck rather than walking across it, and there is an elevator. Clinton has neither — passengers there load at deck level.

With luggage, a pushchair or a wheelchair, that asymmetry is the single most useful thing to know about this route.

Passengers and bicycles pay westbound from Mukilteo and travel free eastbound from Clinton. One fare per round trip, charged here — which is also why the tollbooth queue on this side is the one that backs up.

The corridor

State Route 525 crosses Possession Sound on this ferry, and the route carries more vehicle traffic than any other in the Washington State Ferries system, with over 4 million riders a year — third highest in the network by ridership. It is a highway link, and the loading behaves like one.

A single ferry route from this port has a crossing time of around 20 minutes. This domestic service connects Mukilteo, Washington with Clinton on Whidbey Island, crossing Possession Sound.

Getting to the terminal

• Parking: There is no parking available at the Mukilteo ferry terminal. There are a few short-term spots available for passenger pick-up/drop-off. Paid parking near the terminal is managed by the City of Mukilteo and is limited to 4 hours.
• From Sea-Tac Airport: The Mukilteo Ferry Terminal is about a one-hour drive from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Depending on traffic, the fastest route is to follow signs from the airport to WA-18 East, then take the I-5 North exit to Seattle.
• Cyclists: If you're taking your bike onto the ferry at Mukilteo, you can skip the line of vehicle traffic and purchase tickets at a tollbooth.
