About
About Clinton
This is the busiest route in the Washington State Ferries system for vehicle traffic — more than 4 million riders a year, third highest in the network — and yet the fare desk on this side only charges you in one direction.
⚠ You pay westbound, not eastbound
There is no payment for passengers or bicycles travelling from Clinton to Mukilteo. Fares on this crossing are collected on the mainland side, which means a Whidbey Island resident heading to Everett walks straight on and pays coming home.
For a visitor the practical effect is the same: budget for one fare per round trip, not two, and expect the queue and the tollbooth to be on the Mukilteo side.
Why this crossing carries so much
State Route 525 runs through Clinton to the dock, and the ferry is a link in that highway rather than an excursion. Whidbey Island's only other road connection to the mainland is the Deception Pass bridge at the far northern end — a long way round from the southern half of the island.
That geography, not tourism, is what fills the vehicle deck. Peak traffic starts with the first morning departure and runs through to about the 10:00 sailing.
⚠ Parking at Clinton is limited
There is one small lot beside the tollbooths. The free park-and-ride on Deer Lake Road is the realistic option for anyone leaving a car and walking on, and it fills on weekday mornings.
Cyclists may bypass the vehicle queue to reach the dock — on a 20-minute crossing with a full holding lane, that is a significant advantage.
Washington State Ferries is the sole operator providing services from Clinton, Washington. The company runs a short domestic vehicle and passenger ferry route across Puget Sound to one destination: Mukilteo.
This crossing takes approximately 20 minutes. It is one of two routes connecting Whidbey Island to the mainland road network of Washington state.
