About
About Bremerton
The Bremerton boat takes 60 minutes against Bainbridge's thirty-five, and for a large part of the Kitsap Peninsula it is still the faster way home. It also passes a naval shipyard where mothballed warships sit at anchor.
The crossing
Bremerton to Seattle takes about 60 minutes, with 15 sailings in our timetable and 30 across the terminal in both directions. Operated by Washington State Ferries.
⚠ Fifteen sailings is a timetable, not a service
Compared with Bainbridge's 38, this route runs thin. Outside commuter peaks the gaps are long, and a missed sailing on an hour-long crossing costs a substantial part of an evening.
Check the specific departure. This is not a turn-up-and-go route in the way the shorter central Sound crossings are.
Why take the slow boat
Bremerton is in the middle of the Kitsap Peninsula; Bainbridge is an island at its northern edge. For Port Orchard, Silverdale, Belfair or the Hood Canal, landing here removes a drive that more than cancels the twenty-five-minute difference at sea.
It is also the more scenic of the two, running the length of Rich Passage.
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard
The crossing ends alongside one of the US Navy's largest shipyards, with decommissioned vessels visible from the deck. The USS Turner Joy, a Vietnam-era destroyer, is moored as a museum ship a short walk from the terminal.
Arriving on foot
The terminal sits at the edge of downtown Bremerton with the Kitsap Transit centre attached, and a fast passenger-only service also links the city to Seattle separately from the car ferry. For foot passengers the connections here are better than the sailing count suggests.
Timing
Commuter-shaped and thin midday. Weekend service is lighter still.
