Ferries from Edmonds

Edmonds is the mainland end of one of Puget Sound's busiest short ferry crossings, run by Washington State Ferries (WSF) between Edmonds and Kingston. The terminal sits right in downtown Edmonds, about 15 miles north of Seattle, an easy walk from the town's waterfront, restaurants and the adjacent Sounder commuter-rail and Amtrak station — which makes it genuinely practical to reach car-free.

The crossing

The boat carries you across the Sound to Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula in roughly 20–30 minutes, opening up the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas — Port Townsend, Hood Canal, the Hood Canal Bridge and the road to Olympic National Park lie beyond. It is a year-round, all-day route with frequent sailings, and on a clear day you get the Olympic Mountains ahead and the occasional pod of orcas or a bald eagle from the deck.

Booking, fares and the reservation catch

The single most important thing to know: the Edmonds–Kingston route does not take vehicle reservations. Unlike WSF's Port Townsend or Anacortes/San Juans routes, here it is strictly first-come, first-served for cars — so on summer weekends and Friday afternoons you can wait through one or more boat loads. Arrive early and be prepared to sit in the holding lanes.

Walk-on passengers have it much easier: there is huge deck capacity, no reservation is needed, and you can usually show up 5–10 minutes before departure. On this route the fare is collected westbound (Edmonds to Kingston); the eastbound return is free, so you effectively pay one round-trip fare. Passengers pay a modest adult fare with youth (18 and under) riding free, while taking a car costs substantially more (vehicle-and-driver fare plus the standard peak-season surcharge in summer). Pay by card, ORCA card or cash at the tollbooth or walk-on turnstile.
