Thirteen hours from Spain to Sardinia

Barcelona to Porto Torres is timetabled at 780 minutes, leaving at 21:00 and 22:45 on two days of the week. This is the crossing that connects the Iberian peninsula to Sardinia without going through mainland Italy, and at that length the ship is accommodation as much as transport.

Sardinia has two mainland gates and they behave differently

Livorno to Olbia runs 450 to 540 minutes with departures at 10:00 and 22:30 — a day sailing and a night sailing. Civitavecchia to Olbia is 450 minutes at 22:45, overnight only. And Porto Torres to Civitavecchia takes 465 to 480. Which port you leave from decides whether you lose a day or a night.

The day sailing and the night sailing are different products

On Livorno–Olbia the 10:00 and the 22:30 cover the same water at similar speeds, but one costs you daylight and the other costs you a cabin fee. On a seven-and-a-half-hour crossing that choice is worth more than the fare difference between operators, and it is the single most useful thing to decide before booking.

Naples to Palermo, eight and a half hours overnight

Naples to Palermo is 510 minutes, running daily with departures at 09:00 and 20:00. The evening sailing arrives in Sicily in the morning; the morning sailing arrives at night. Both exist because the route carries freight as well as passengers, and lorries do not care which end of the day they travel.

Day masks matter on the Spanish and Sardinian legs

The Barcelona and Porto Torres departures do not run every day — they carry restricted day patterns covering only part of the week, unlike the daily Naples and Olbia services. On a thirteen-hour crossing with sailings a few days apart, missing one is not a matter of waiting a few hours.
