Ferries from Livorno

The berth your Sardinia ferry uses is a corner of a building site worth about a billion euros. Livorno is being rebuilt around container ships you will never see: two new terminals, four kilometres of new quay, two million square metres of yard and a new harbour entrance. The passenger terminal sits inside all of it.

What is under construction

• Darsena Europa — dredging the main container channel from 14.5 m to 16 m so the port can take ultra-large container vessels of up to 24,000 TEU. Originally due in 2026, environmental permitting has pushed operational readiness to the second half of 2027.
• Piattaforma Europa — the wider reconfiguration: about €1 billion, two large new terminals, 4 km of new quays, 2 million m² of yards, depths to −20 m, and a new entrance to the harbour.
• The target is 1,500,000 TEU a year by 2035 — roughly double current capacity.

⚠ What that means for a ferry passenger

Not much on the day, and a great deal over a few years. Approach roads, signage and holding areas move as the works progress, and directions given by an older guide or a returning traveller go out of date faster here than at a stable port.

The passenger side today

Ferries use the Stazione Marittima. From our timetable the routes are Olbia with 5 sailings at about 7 h 30 m, Golfo Aranci with 2 at around 10 hours, and Bastia in Corsica with 2 at about 4 h 30 m.

Seventeen active sailings in total — a small passenger operation attached to a very large freight port, which is the honest description of Livorno.

Why the port is here at all

Livorno was built as the Medici grand duchy's free port and grew on the back of tolerated trade and tolerated religion; the old canal quarter behind the docks is what survives of that city. The container terminals are the same logic four centuries later — a port whose reason for existing is transit rather than its own hinterland.

Getting to the terminal

Livorno is on the main Tyrrhenian railway, with Pisa about twenty minutes away and Florence roughly an hour and a half. Arriving by train and continuing by sea is realistic here in a way it is not at most vehicle ferry ports.
