Ferries from Palermo

Sicily's capital port faces north, and that is the whole logic of its timetable: 65 active sailings, almost all of them running up the Tyrrhenian to the Italian mainland rather than out into the Mediterranean.

⚠ Palermo is not how most people reach Sicily

The overwhelming majority of vehicle traffic to the island crosses the Strait of Messina at Villa San Giovanni — twenty minutes of water, dozens of sailings a day. Palermo's ferries exist for people coming from further north who would rather sleep through the drive.

The comparison to make is not ferry against ferry. It is one night on a ship against a full day on the autostrada.

What that means for booking

Because these are overnight crossings carrying vehicles and freight, the cabin is the scarce resource rather than the passage. On the Genoa run in particular, the sailing may still be open when every cabin has gone.

The port and the city

The terminals sit immediately north of the historic centre, close enough to walk into the old city with light luggage. That is unusual for a port of this size and it makes Palermo genuinely practical as a foot-passenger arrival.

The main station is a bus or taxi ride away on the far side of the centre, which is the one awkward connection.

Season

Year-round on all the mainland routes — freight keeps them running. Passenger demand and cabin prices climb steeply from June, and the August return sailings northward are the hardest of the year to book.
