About

About Tirrenia

Tirrenia is one of Italy's principal long-haul ferry lines, connecting the mainland with Sardinia and Sicily on overnight crossings. It is operated by Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione, part of the Onorato Armatori group.

Fares written into a public service contract

Tirrenia's Sardinian routes run under a convention with the Italian state, which caps what may be charged — the company publishes those maximum tariffs separately from its commercial fares. It is a different arrangement from a purely commercial line, and it exists because these crossings are considered essential to island life rather than optional.

Resident and island-born discounts

Reduced fares apply to residents of Sardinia and to people born there, with specific windows: Santa Teresa–Bonifacio until 31 December 2026, and Civitavecchia–Olbia and Genoa–Porto Torres from 1 June to 30 September 2026. Places allocated to the scheme are limited and released until they run out — so on these routes, booking early is not just about price.

On board

Overnight sailings carry cabins, restaurants and shops. The company holds licences for DC Comics and Looney Tunes characters, used in family entertainment and themed spaces aboard.
