About the PalermoNaples crossing

The Palermo to Naples ferry is the classic Tyrrhenian night crossing, linking Sicily's capital with the Bay of Naples across roughly 167 nautical miles of open sea. It is one of the busiest and most established sea routes in Italy, running year-round as a comfortable overnight sailing that lets you travel while you sleep and step ashore ready for the day.

Operators and vessels

Two long-standing companies share the route. GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci) and Tirrenia both operate large cruise-style ferries fitted with cabins, reclining seats, restaurants, bars, shops and lounges. Tirrenia is now part of the Grimaldi Group, so services carry the reliability of one of the Mediterranean's biggest operators. Vessels are full car ferries, taking cars, motorbikes, campers and freight alongside foot passengers.

Crossing time and schedule

The overnight passage takes about 10 to 11 hours. Tirrenia typically sails from Palermo around 20:15, reaching Naples early the next morning near 06:45, while GNV runs late departures around 20:00 or close to midnight arriving mid-morning. Winter usually offers two overnight departures, and in peak summer (late July and August) a third daytime weekend sailing is added, building to more than twenty crossings a week.

Ports

Both terminals sit right in the city. Palermo's port is a short walk from the historic centre, and Naples' Stazione Marittima is beside Piazza Municipio, steps from the old town and connected to the rail network. This makes the route practical for travellers without a car as well as those bringing a vehicle to Sicily.

Because it doubles as transport and a mini-cruise, an overnight cabin is the popular choice, saving a hotel night while covering serious distance between mainland Italy and the island.

About Naples

Naples has four ferry terminals and the one you need is decided by the boat, not the island. Hydrofoils leave from Molo Beverello under Castel Nuovo; conventional ferries — everything carrying a car — leave from Calata Porta di Massa, fifteen minutes' walk away; Mergellina is a different neighbourhood altogether. Capri, Ischia and Procida are each served from more than one of them.
