Ferries from Naples

The terminal most passengers use here is new. Molo Beverello was rebuilt as the first stage of the Naples waterfront redevelopment, and its panoramic walkway above the ferry hall opened in August 2024 — a public roof over a working quay, which is not how Italian ferry terminals usually go.

The rebuilt Beverello

The new terminal came out of a design competition won back in 2004 by a consortium of practices, and took two decades to reach completion. What it replaced was a row of ticket huts on an open quay.

Above the enclosed areas there is now a walkway open to the public, looking over the bay toward Vesuvius and Capri. It is the rare case of port infrastructure that people visit deliberately.

Naples separates its traffic by vessel type rather than by destination: Beverello takes hydrofoils and fast craft, Calata Porta di Massa takes the conventional ferries and vehicles, Mergellina handles some fast services, and there is a fourth quay besides.

Two boats to the same island can therefore leave from different places, fifteen minutes' walk apart. The Naples guide sets out which is which.

What sails

Our timetable holds 50 active sailings from Naples. The bay islands dominate by frequency, but the heaviest single corridor is the overnight run to Palermo with 16 sailings — more than any Capri or Ischia route in our data, and almost entirely ignored by Bay of Naples coverage.

Getting to Beverello

The terminal is beside Castel Nuovo at the foot of the city centre, with Piazza Municipio metro station immediately behind it. That makes it the easiest major Italian ferry terminal to reach without a car.

Calata Porta di Massa, for the vehicle ferries, is about fifteen minutes' walk east along the same waterfront — close enough to look like the same place on a map and far enough to matter with bags.

Season

The island services run all year but thicken enormously from June, and the fast craft are the first thing cancelled in wind. The Sicily and Sardinia overnights are less seasonal because they carry freight as well as passengers.
