Tunis to Palermo Ferry

The Tunis to Palermo ferry is the shortest crossing between Tunisia and Italy, linking La Goulette, the port of Tunis, with Palermo, the capital of Sicily. Its relatively brief duration and the appeal of arriving directly in Sicily make it a favourite with holidaymakers, day-and-night travellers and drivers who want the quickest sea route across this stretch of the Mediterranean.

The line is served by GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci) and Grimaldi Lines, with Tunisia's CTN also active on the Tunisia-Sicily corridor. The ferries are conventional passenger-vehicle vessels offering cabins, reclining seats, on-board catering and garage decks for cars and motorhomes.

Crossing time and frequency

Because Palermo is the closest major Italian port to Tunis, the sailing is comparatively short at around 10 to 11 hours, with the fastest Grimaldi Lines departures near 11 hours 30 minutes and some vessels quoted lower. Overnight sailings let passengers arrive rested in the morning. Departures run year-round, generally two to three times a week, increasing across the summer.

La Goulette is about 10 to 11 km from central Tunis and reachable by the TGM railway and taxis. Palermo's ferry terminal is close to the historic city centre, making onward travel around Sicily straightforward. This is an international crossing between Tunisia and Italy, a Schengen country, so a valid passport is required and non-EU travellers should confirm visa rules. Cars can be carried with GNV and Grimaldi Lines; arrive early for customs and boarding.
