Marseille to Tunis Ferry

The Marseille to Tunis ferry is one of the main sea links between France and Tunisia, connecting the port of Marseille in Provence with La Goulette, the ferry port serving the Tunisian capital, located roughly 10 km from central Tunis. It is a key international crossing across the western Mediterranean, heavily used by the Tunisian community in France as well as by tourists and drivers heading into North Africa.

Operators and ports

The route is operated by CTN (Compagnie Tunisienne de Navigation), the Tunisian national line, together with Corsica Linea. Ships depart from Marseille's ferry terminal and arrive at La Goulette, from where the centre of Tunis and the coastal suburbs are a short transfer away. Both operators run large car ferries able to carry vehicles alongside foot passengers.

Crossing time

This is a long-haul Mediterranean crossing. The passage typically lasts somewhere in the range of 20 to 24 hours, and in practice can run longer depending on the ship and direction of travel. Because of the duration, sailings are effectively an overnight-plus-day journey, and a cabin is strongly advisable for rest over the long hours at sea.

Frequency and season

Frequency varies through the year. In the low season there is generally around one weekly return sailing, rising to roughly two departures per week during the busier summer months when demand from travellers visiting family peaks. Space, especially for vehicles and cabins, can be scarce in high summer and should be booked well ahead.

Passport and vehicles

This is an international crossing between the EU and Tunisia, so a valid passport is required for all passengers, and non-EU nationals should check visa requirements for Tunisia. Drivers bringing a car or motorhome must carry the vehicle's registration documents and appropriate insurance. On board you will find cabins, restaurants, bars and lounge areas for the long voyage.
