Arrecife to Santa Cruz de Tenerife Ferry

Spanning almost the full width of the Canary archipelago, this long-haul inter-island route connects Arrecife on Lanzarote with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the western province. It is run by Naviera Armas (Armas Trasmediterránea group) on full-size ro-pax ferries — among them the Volcán de Tinamar — not on high-speed catamarans. Many sailings are not point-to-point: the ship frequently calls at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria en route, which is the main reason the timings vary so much.

Plan for a long crossing. The quickest scheduled sailings reach Santa Cruz in about 10 hours, but rotations that stop at Gran Canaria or run on a slower vessel can take 16 hours or more. That makes it as much an overnight repositioning voyage as a simple hop, so it is worth reading the individual timetable carefully before booking — two departures on the same route can differ by several hours.

Service runs year-round, typically on the order of five to seven sailings per week, with departures generally from late morning into the evening. Because Lanzarote and Tenerife sit at opposite ends of the islands, this is one of the longest of the domestic Canary links and a genuine alternative to flying only if you are moving a vehicle or prefer sea travel.

The ferries carry cars, motorhomes and freight on spacious garage decks, and offer reserved-seat lounges plus cabins — the latter well worth considering given the crossing length. Onboard facilities include cafeteria and restaurant service, lounges and pet-friendly options. For travellers relocating between the islands or combining a Lanzarote and Tenerife itinerary with their own car, it removes the need to arrange separate vehicle hire on each island. Advance booking is sensible, particularly for cabins and vehicle space in high season.
