About the Santa Cruz de Tenerife – Agaete crossing
This is the fast-ferry link between Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of Tenerife, and the port of Agaete on the northwest coast of Gran Canaria. It is operated by Fred. Olsen Express, the Canary Islands' leading fast-ferry company, and it is one of the busiest inter-island crossings in the archipelago.
The service is worked by Fred. Olsen's high-speed trimarans of the Bajamar Express / Bencomo Express class, purpose-built aluminium vessels that keep the open-water crossing to roughly 80 minutes. Frequency is generous: there are up to seven or eight departures per day in each direction, running from early morning (around 06:00) through to the evening, all year round. Because it is fast and frequent, this is a genuine day-trip route as well as a commuter and vehicle link.
The ferries carry cars, motorcycles, vans and campervans as well as foot passengers; vehicle make, model and licence plate are requested at booking. On arrival at Agaete, Fred. Olsen operates a connecting Ferry Bus that runs down to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (about 30-40 minutes), so passengers without a car can continue straight to the Gran Canaria capital; seats are limited and should be reserved in advance.
Note that Fred. Olsen also runs the same trimarans to Agaete from Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife. Travellers should check which Tenerife port their sailing actually uses, as Santa Cruz (north/east) and Los Cristianos (south) are on opposite ends of the island. Resident islanders qualify for a substantial fare discount, and booking ahead is recommended in peak season and for any crossing with a vehicle.
