Santa Cruz de La Palma to Puerto del Rosario Ferry

This is one of the longest sea links in the Canary archipelago, connecting Santa Cruz de La Palma, the capital of the westernmost major island, with Puerto del Rosario, the capital and main port of Fuerteventura in the far east. In a straight line the ports lie roughly 382 km apart, so this is nothing like the short hops between neighbouring islands. It is operated by Naviera Armas (trading as Armas Trasmediterránea), using the ferry Ciudad de Valencia, which carries up to 605 passengers and 240 vehicles.

Because La Palma and Fuerteventura sit at opposite ends of the island chain, the crossing is not a quick direct dash but the end-to-end leg of a long inter-island line that threads through the archipelago. Total travel time is therefore very long by Canary standards — commonly cited at around 26 to 27 hours — and departures are infrequent, typically only about once a week, with a common departure around 16:00. In practice this makes it an overnight-plus voyage rather than a day trip.

The Ciudad de Valencia is fitted out for long journeys, which is on a sailing of this length. Onboard facilities include a range of cabins (double, quadruple and suites) so you can sleep on the overnight stretch, reclining tourist seating and reduced-mobility seating, a cafeteria with varied menus including children's and gluten-free options, board games, free Wi-Fi and pet facilities such as an outdoor walking area and cages. Vehicles up to camper-van size are carried on the car deck.

For most travellers between the two islands, a direct sea crossing of well over a day is impractical, and many choose to break the journey or fly instead. This ferry is best suited to those moving vehicles, freight or pets across the archipelago, or to travellers who specifically want the sea passage. Because frequency is so low and timings shift seasonally, confirm the exact day and departure time before planning around it.
