About the MarmarisSymi crossing

Symi is one of the most photographed islands in the Dodecanese, famous for the neoclassical mansions in ochre, blue and terracotta that rise in tiers above Gialos harbour, and for the Panormitis Monastery at its southern tip. It lies just off the Turkish coast near Marmaris, yet the direct sea link is not straightforward: the once-run direct Marmaris-Symi crossing has been discontinued in recent seasons for lack of demand, so most travellers now reach Symi via Rhodes.

How the connection works today

From Marmaris, a high-speed catamaran crosses to Rhodes in about 50 minutes; frequent catamarans then link Rhodes with Symi in roughly 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter, with several departures a day in summer. Operators such as Sea Dreams run the Rhodes-Symi and Rhodes-Marmaris legs with modern catamarans, and some seasonal excursion loops combine Rhodes, Symi and Marmaris. If a direct seasonal Marmaris-Symi excursion is advertised for 2026, treat it as a limited charter-style sailing and confirm it is actually running before booking.

Season

This is a summer-season route. Marmaris-Rhodes catamarans run through much of the year but intensify in high season, while Symi connections are busiest between spring and autumn. Timings and the return schedule are tight for a day trip, so check the last boats carefully.

Passports and border formalities

Crossing from Marmaris to Greek territory means passing an EU external border, so a valid passport is mandatory and passport control applies at every port, including on the connecting legs. Non-EU visitors should check Schengen visa rules. Symi is included in Greece's eastern Aegean express visa-on-arrival scheme for Turkish citizens. Because a day trip usually involves two boats each way, leave a comfortable connection buffer at Rhodes so a delay does not strand you.

About Symi

Every morning in season, excursion boats leave Rhodes Town for Symi at half past eight and bring everyone back by seven. For those hours the harbour at Gialos is full. What almost nobody does is stay — and Gialos, a neoclassical amphitheatre of ochre and white houses stacked around the water, is a different place once the day boats have gone.
