The Civitavecchia to Tunis ferry is the most convenient sea link between central Italy and Tunisia, sailing from the port of Civitavecchia roughly 80 km northwest of Rome to La Goulette (Halq al-Wadi), the passenger harbour that serves the Tunisian capital about 10 km from the city centre. It is a long-haul Mediterranean crossing rather than a quick hop, so most passengers travel with a cabin and treat the voyage as an overnight or full-day sea journey.

Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) is the main carrier and typically publishes the longer sailings, in the region of 22 to 28 hours depending on the vessel and stops, while Grimaldi Lines runs a faster service closer to 18 to 19 hours. Actual duration varies with the ship, sea conditions and whether the sailing routes directly or via another port, so always check the exact departure and arrival times shown at booking.

Frequency and seasons

Sailings run year-round but the timetable is heavily seasonal. GNV operates several departures a week in peak months, supplemented by Grimaldi Lines, giving strong summer capacity for the large numbers of Tunisian families and tourists travelling between Rome and Tunis. Outside high season the frequency drops to a small number of weekly departures, so booking ahead is important.

Vehicles and onboard

The ships carry cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and freight alongside foot passengers, making this a popular driving route into North Africa. Onboard you will normally find cabins of several classes, reclining seats, restaurants, bars, shops and outdoor deck space for the long passage.
