About

About Linge ferjekai

Two of Norway's most photographed roads are the same road, and this is where it crosses water. Coming from Geiranger, Fylkesvei 63 climbs the Ørnevegen hairpins, drops to the Norddalsfjord, and stops at a slipway. Thirteen minutes later it starts again on the far side and carries on toward Trollstigen. Without this ferry the route does not exist.

The crossing

Linge to Eidsdal takes about 13 minutes. Our timetable holds 66 sailings in this direction and 57 coming back, spanning the day from early morning to late evening.

Three vessels work the route — M/F Harøy, M/F Sykkylvsfjord and M/F Aukra — and they are small: the Aukra takes 36 cars. On a July afternoon that number is the whole story, and it is covered on the Eidsdal page along with how payment works.

Who runs it, and why you will see two names

The service is part of the Fram public transport network for Møre og Romsdal county, and it is operated under contract by Fjord1. Both names are correct and they appear on different signs, timetables and apps, which causes more confusion than it should.

Fylkesvei 63 is a county road, so this is a road ferry in the legal sense: part of the highway rather than a service running alongside it.

What the ferry connects on each side

West of Linge the road runs along the fjord to Valldal and Sylte, then turns inland and climbs to Trollstigen, the eleven-hairpin descent toward Åndalsnes. East of Eidsdal it climbs the Ørnevegen — the Eagle Road — with the viewpoint over the Geirangerfjord at the top.

So the two ends of a thirteen-minute crossing are the two set pieces of western Norway. See the Geirangerfjord guide for the fjord itself and the separate Hellesylt crossing, which is a different boat on a different water.

⚠ Do not plan this as a fixed transfer

Sailings are frequent but capacity is not elastic, and in high summer the road either side of the slipway fills with motorhomes. There is no booking, so a full boat means waiting for the next one.

Build slack into a day that includes both Trollstigen and Geiranger. The mountain roads themselves are slow, single-file in places, and closed by snow for a large part of the year — the ferry is rarely the bottleneck, but it is the part with a timetable.

Season

The crossing runs year round because Fv63 is a public road and people live on both sides. What changes is everything around it: Trollstigen and the high sections close in winter, which turns a scenic through-route into a local link between two valleys.

June to August is when the queue exists at all. May and September give you the same thirteen minutes with an empty slipway.
