About Hornby Island (Shingle Spit)
Hornby Island has no parking at its terminal, and getting here took two ferries and a drive across another island. Shingle Spit is the end of a chain that catches out almost everyone who tries it for the first time in August.
The crossing
Shingle Spit to Gravelly Bay on Denman Island takes about 10 minutes, with 15 sailings and 30 across the terminal in both directions. Operated by BC Ferries.
⚠ The way out is three stages, in reverse
- Shingle Spit to Gravelly Bay — 10 minutes, 15 sailings.
- Drive about 15 minutes across Denman Island.
- Denman Island West to Buckley Bay — 10 minutes, 26 sailings.
The two timetables are not coordinated. Leaving Hornby on a Sunday in summer means the queue at Shingle Spit forms hours before the sailing, and making it does not guarantee the second boat.
Parking
None at all. Denman West offers 9 spaces and Gravelly Bay 5; Buckley Bay has none. Across the whole chain there are fourteen spaces.
This is a route designed for vehicles that keep moving.
The island
Hornby is small, hilly and famous out of proportion to its size — Tribune Bay's white sand, Helliwell Provincial Park on the bluffs, and a summer population many times the winter one. There is a co-op store at Ringside Market and limited accommodation.
Season
Year round, but this is a summer island. July and August are when the chain strains; in winter the ferries are half empty and the island is very quiet.
