Getting to Hornby from Vancouver Island takes two ferries — Buckley Bay to Denman, then this one across to Shingle Spit — which is why the island's population of about a thousand roughly quadruples in summer and not more. Hornby's Tribune Bay has one of the few true sand beaches on this coast, and the two-ferry approach is the reason it has never been overwhelmed.
