Gravelly Bay is the middle of a three-stage journey that most people think is one ferry. Getting to Hornby Island means a boat, then a 15-minute drive across Denman Island, then a second boat — and this terminal is where the second one leaves from.
The crossing
Gravelly Bay to Hornby Island (Shingle Spit) takes about 10 minutes, with 15 sailings and 30 across the terminal in both directions. Operated by BC Ferries, non-bookable, fares paid on board.

- Buckley Bay on Vancouver Island — no parking — 10 minutes to Denman Island West.
- Drive about 15 minutes across Denman to this terminal.
- Gravelly Bay to Shingle Spit — another 10 minutes.
The two ferries are on separate timetables and are not timed to connect. Missing the second one after making the first is the standard Hornby Island experience, and the wait is spent at a slipway with almost nothing on it.

Anyone planning to leave a car and walk onto the Hornby boat needs a different plan.
Denman Island
Farms, forest and a small commercial centre near the west terminal. Most traffic through Gravelly Bay is passing over rather than stopping, which is why the road across the island is the busiest thing on it in July.
