About Buckley Bay
Buckley Bay exists to put cars on a ten-minute boat to Denman Island. It has 52 active sailings, a slipway, and no parking whatsoever — which makes it one of the purest examples of a terminal that is a piece of road rather than a place.
The crossing
Buckley Bay to Denman Island West takes about 10 minutes, with 26 sailings and 52 across the terminal in both directions. Operated by BC Ferries.
⚠ Nowhere to leave a car, at either end of the chain
There is no parking here at all. If your plan involves walking onto the boat, you need to have been dropped off — and Denman's own terminals are similarly bare.
This is a vehicle route. Treat it as one.
The two-ferry island chain
Denman is not the destination for many people using this crossing. From Denman's eastern side at Gravelly Bay, a second ferry crosses to Hornby Island — another ten minutes, and a much thinner service.
Buckley Bay to Denman to Hornby is a three-stage journey with a drive across Denman in the middle. Budget for the whole chain, not the first ten minutes of it.
Where this is
On the Vancouver Island shore of Baynes Sound, between Courtenay and Qualicum Beach on Highway 19A. The terminal is directly off the highway with a waiting lane and very little else.
Season
Year round. Hornby in particular is a summer destination, and the July and August queues at Buckley Bay are formed by people heading two islands further on.
