About

About Hooge (Hallig)

Hallig Hooge has no dyke. Several times each winter the North Sea runs over the whole island and leaves only the ten Warften — artificial mounds, some of them centuries old — standing above the water with the houses on top. About a hundred people live here.

The ferry from Schlüttsiel takes 75 minutes and arrives at 11:15 and 19:15 in the main season; going back takes 95, leaving at 08:00 and 16:00. Between November and mid-December there are five sailings a week and none on Mondays or Wednesdays. The boat is the Hilligenlei, the smallest in the W.D.R. fleet.

There is no bus. Horse-drawn carriages meet the ferry, and the island is small enough to walk or cycle across in an afternoon — a bicycle costs €10.50 return on the boat. Most visitors come for a few hours between sailings; the connecting leg on to Langeneß takes another half hour.
