Snelandia

Snelandia is the public transport brand of Finnmark, the vast Arctic county at the very top of Norway. Alongside its long-distance buses, it runs the express boats and car ferries that are often the only link to Finnmark's roadless coastal communities — a lifeline strung along a coastline that runs from Loppa in the west, past the North Cape, to Varanger on the Russian border.

Express boats and ferries in the Arctic

Fast passenger boats (hurtigbåt) reach out from the towns to the islands and fjord villages: from Hammerfest across to Sørøya, Norway's fourth-largest island, and up the Altafjord to Alta on the RognsundXpressen. Car ferries such as Øksfjord–Hasvik and the Loppa connections carry vehicles between the mainland and the outer islands. One practical quirk of the Arctic express boats: you must book your stop in advance — a ticket alone does not guarantee a seat.

Boats and buses share the same Snelandia ticketing, bought in the Snelandia Mobillett app or online, and the summer Sommerbilletten gives a week of unlimited travel across the whole network. Timetables and place names appear in Norwegian and in North Sámi (Davvisámegillii), a reminder that this is the homeland of the Sámi people.
